Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir has strongly defended the decision to leave 15-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi out of the playing XI for the fifth and final T20I against New Zealand, emphasizing that his responsibility is to prioritize team security over public opinion.
Despite holding an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series, India opted against testing young talent in the dead rubber, retaining a full-strength batting unit for the series finale on Sunday, November 1, 2026.
Gambhir Hits Back at Social Media Noise and Selection Pressure
Speaking to official broadcasters prior to the match toss, Gambhir addressed the surrounding debates regarding squad rotation and youth integration:
”First of all, my job is not to make everyone happy. My job is to take the right decisions, not the popular decisions. And that is what I’m there for. It is very easy to take the popular decision. But for me, I think the important thing is to take the right decision and make sure that there is a lot of security inside the dressing room.”
Addressing the depth of talent available in Indian cricket, Gambhir asserted that players with established track records warrant extended opportunities over quick rotations:
”Because there’s a lot of talent. But again, I think guys have done phenomenally well over a longer period of time. Obviously, deserve a longer rope. And that is exactly how we approach the series.”
Sooryavanshi’s Series Stint & India’s Final Playing XI
Sooryavanshi featured in two matches during the series, coming into the side after wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan suffered a temporary groin injury.
After a low single-digit score on debut, the teenager delivered a blistering 45-run knock in the 3rd T20I, contributing to a world-record powerplay partnership with Abhishek Sharma. However, he returned to the bench once Kishan regained full fitness.
India made two changes exclusively to their bowling department for the 5th T20I. The management fielded an unchanged batting line-up featuring Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan (wk), captain Shreyas Iyer, Tilak Varma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Naman Dhir. The bowling attack comprised Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep Singh, Prince Yadav, and Varun Chakaravarthy.
