As the remnants of Cyclone Arnab dissipate into a well-marked low-pressure area over north Chhattisgarh and adjoining northwest Odisha, a fresh low-pressure system over the South Andaman Sea is set to intensify into a depression by Saturday, October 31, 2026.
According to the latest meteorological bulletin issued by the IMD Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar on Friday, October 30, the new atmospheric system is expected to move west-northwestwards across the southeast Bay of Bengal before approaching the Andhra Pradesh coast over the next two days.
Immediate Local Impact and Regional Weather Alerts
While the immediate threat from Cyclone Arnab has subsided, residual atmospheric instability continues to affect northern and western districts of Odisha before the secondary system approaches:
- 24-Hour Period Ending 8:30 AM, Oct 31: A Yellow Warning is active for Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, and Sambalpur districts for isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds reaching 30–40 kmph (gusting to 50 kmph).
- 24-Hour Period Ending 8:30 AM, Nov 1: No severe weather warnings are in effect across Odisha as the system transitions over the Bay of Bengal.
- 24-Hour Period Ending 8:30 AM, Nov 2: A Yellow Warning for heavy rainfall has been issued for five southern coastal and tribal-dominated districts: Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, and Ganjam.
Orange Warning Issued for Malkangiri for Nov 2–3
As the prospective depression approaches the East Coast, precipitation is expected to intensify across southern Odisha. The IMD has issued an Orange Warning (heavy to very heavy rainfall) for isolated places in Malkangiri district for the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 AM on November 3.
Concurrently, a Yellow Warning remains in place for heavy rainfall across Rayagada, Koraput, Gajapati, and Ganjam districts. District administrations in southern Odisha—already managing infrastructure repairs and swelling river basins, such as the Harabhangi River in Gajapati—have been alerted to maintain disaster readiness.
