Sir Patrick Stewart, the acclaimed British stage and screen icon best known worldwide as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men franchise, died on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at his home in Los Angeles. He was 86.

His spokesperson, Kelly Bush Novak, confirmed his passing in a statement shared on his official social media accounts, revealing that the legendary actor died surrounded by family following “a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia”.

A Triumphant Legacy Across Stage and Screen

Born in Mirfield, Yorkshire, in 1940, Stewart built a formidable reputation as a classical stage actor, performing extensively with the Royal Shakespeare Company. He achieved international stardom in 1987 when he assumed the command chair as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation. He later brought Professor Charles Xavier to life in 2000’s X-Men, anchoring two of sci-fi cinema’s most iconic franchises for decades.

Throughout his six-decade career, Stewart earned two Laurence Olivier Awards, three Olivier nominations, a Grammy Award, and multiple Primetime Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. Queen Elizabeth II knighted him for services to drama in 2010.

Hollywood and Global Tributes Pour In

News of his death prompted a wave of tributes from co-stars, industry colleagues, and major studios:

”We lost one of the greats of stage and screen today. And, in my book, a tremendous friend and man. I learned so much from him. I will miss you, Patrick Stewart, all of my days.”

— Hugh Jackman (X-Men co-star)

”Sir Patrick Stewart was a friend, a colleague, and a magnificent actor. From the stage to the bridge of the Enterprise, he brought intelligence, grace, and a deep sense of humanity to everything he did. Captain Picard stood for the best of us, and so did the man who played him.”

— William Shatner (Star Trek co-star)

In an official statement, Marvel Studios expressed profound sorrow, noting that Stewart “brought Professor Charles Xavier to life with extraordinary grace, intelligence, and humanity, defining the character for generations”.

Stewart is survived by his wife, singer-songwriter Sunny Ozell, and his two adult children, Daniel and Sophia, from his first marriage. In lieu of flowers, his family requested memorial contributions to the Johns Hopkins Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center Fund and the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. His final screen performance will be in Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday.
