A devastating Russian strike using a high-speed, jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) directly slammed into a busy passenger platform at the central railway station in Dnipro.
The attack killed at least 13 people and left 10 others injured.
The targeted strike hit Platform No. 1, where Train No. 866—a commuter route scheduled to travel between Dnipro and Zaporizhzhia—was stationary. Emergency services, first responders, and medical personnel immediately rushed to the scene to assist victims and clear debris.
Tragic Assault on Commuter Hub
According to a statement from Ukraine’s national rail operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, the attack unfolded despite early warnings issued regarding elevated threat levels. Hundreds of civilian travellers remained on and around the platform when the drone impacted.
Dnipro Mayor Borys Filatov publicly mourned the event, describing it as “a deep tragedy for our city” and confirming that a civilian electric passenger train bore the primary force of the explosion.
“The enemy launched a strike using a jet-powered UAV against the railway station in Dnipro. The strike hit one of the platforms where train No. 866 was located at the time.” — Ukrzaliznytsia (Ukrainian Railways)
Zelensky Demands Tougher Western Sanctions
Responding directly to the tragedy, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack as a deliberate act of terror aimed at civilian transport corridors. Zelensky appealed to international partners—specifically urging the European Union, the United States, and the G7—to act forcefully by imposing fresh, stringent economic sanctions against Moscow.
Zelensky questioned recent global policy decisions, writing on X (formerly Twitter):
“Just how many terrorist strikes has Russia carried out against our people since sanctions were lifted on certain Russian oligarchs and the Russian energy sector, rather than de-escalating? This is precisely why Ukraine has always said that just and decisive action by America and Europe is needed… sanctions against Moscow and its war machine must not be eased for as long as this Russian war continues.”
Mounting Campaign Against Ukraine’s Railway Network
This attack underscores an escalating Russian offensive aimed at crippling Ukraine’s rail infrastructure—a key lifeline for humanitarian supplies, civilian evacuation, and domestic transport.
-
Systemic Assaults: Ukrzaliznytsia reported that Russian military forces targeted over 1,700 railway facilities in 2026 alone, including passenger cars, engine yards, and stations.
-
Persistent Threats: Last month, a Russian drone struck a train near the Polish border shortly after a high-level diplomatic delegation passed through the area.
-
Advanced Drone Technology: Russian forces increasingly employ newer, jet-powered UAVs that fly at higher speeds, making them significantly harder for Ukrainian defence units to intercept before impact.
As rescue teams conclude their search efforts at the station, local authorities in Dnipro continue working to identify all victims and repair damage to the regional transit lines.
