A moderate earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck 218 kilometres north-northwest of Bamboo Flat in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Thursday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
Authorities confirmed that there were no immediate reports of property damage, infrastructural destruction, or casualties following the tremor.
Local disaster management teams and district administrations are closely monitoring the situation across the island chain to assess any potential impact in remote coastal areas.
The Andaman and Nicobar archipelago sits on a tectonically active zone and has experienced frequent seismic movements in recent months. Earlier seismic events recorded by the National Centre for Seismology include a magnitude 4.6 earthquake that hit the region in the early hours of February 2, 2026.
Seismologists continue to keep a close watch on regional fault lines as routine monitoring remains active across the Union Territory.
