Jordanian security forces have successfully apprehended three suspects linked to the horrific church attack in the southern Karak governorate, an incident that left nine people dead and 40 others wounded.
According to Jordan’s Public Security Directorate, a precision tracking operation led authorities to an abandoned house early Monday where the suspects were hiding out. Refusing to surrender, the suspects opened fire on law enforcement officers. Security personnel returned fire, wounding all three individuals before safely taking them into custody. No security officers were injured during the raid, and officers successfully seized multiple firearms and ammunition caches at the scene.
The devastating attack initially unfolded during a funeral service, drawing widespread horror and grief across the nation and the international community. While the interior minister confirmed that extremists orchestrated the assault, officials noted that it remains premature to link the suspects to specific domestic or international militant organisations, as no group has officially claimed responsibility.
International Outrage and Solidarity
The massacre has triggered an immediate wave of condemnation from regional neighbours and global leaders alike:
-
Regional Leaders: Governments from Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, and Oman voiced profound outrage. Ahmed al-Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Cairo’s Al-Azhar, condemned the shooting as a “heinous terrorist attack”, extending heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein phoned his Jordanian counterpart to reaffirm Baghdad’s absolute solidarity with Amman in the face of violent extremism.
-
United Nations: UN Secretary-General António Guterres strongly denounced the bloodbath, emphasising that targeting a solemn funeral gathering is “especially heinous” and demanding that all perpetrators face swift accountability.
-
India: Strongly denouncing the killings, India’s Ministry of External Affairs expressed deep solidarity with Jordan. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar extended condolences to the victims’ families and wished a rapid recovery to those injured.
As investigations continue, the swift capture of the suspects marks a critical step toward accountability in an ordeal that has shaken communities nationwide.
