A 55-year-old man was killed on Sunday in Cheranalloor, Kochi, after a high-speed Mercedes-Benz allegedly driven by the 17-year-old son of a judicial officer rammed into his scooter from behind.
The victim, identified as Jayabalakrishnan, was returning home after closing his roadside food stall when the collision occurred between 2 AM and 3 AM. The impact left the scooter mangled, killing him on the spot.
Following the crash, the Cheranalloor police took the 17-year-old driver into custody and seized the luxury car, which is registered under his father’s name. Preliminary tests indicated that the minor was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident, though blood samples have been sent for further laboratory analysis.
Cases have been registered under Sections 281 and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for rash driving and causing death by negligence.
The victim’s niece alleged that the car was being driven at an excessive speed without a valid license. She also claimed that the minor’s father spoke to the family in a disrespectful tone at the police station, asserting that they intend to pursue legal action.
