The political landscape in the national capital experienced intense friction on Saturday as the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) pressed forward with its planned demonstration at Jantar Mantar.
The move follows a sweeping crackdown by Delhi Police, which detained party founder Abhijeet Dipke, along with key figures Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, directly upon their arrival at the airport.
With its primary leadership locked away, the CJP announced that organisation in-charge Ajinkya Shinde will step into the vanguard to direct the ongoing agitation.
Pre-Recorded Directives and Leadership Transition
Anticipating swift police action, Dipke had filmed a video message on Friday night before travelling to Delhi. Released by the party following his detention, the clip served as a rallying cry against the authorities.
“Until Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka are in detention, CJP’s Organization In-Charge Ajinkya Shinde will lead this protest at Jantar Mantar,” the party stated while broadcasting the pre-recorded address.
Dipke earlier accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah of weaponising security apparatuses to suppress public participation and dodge accountability concerning demands for Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation.
Lockdown and Comprehensive Security Measures
Security across central Delhi transformed into an impenetrable fortress ahead of the proposed gathering. Delhi Police officially denied permission for the demonstration, citing potential threats to law and order and major commuter disruptions. Under Section 65 of the Delhi Police Act, authorities detained thousands of individuals to thwart unauthorised assemblies.
Heavy barricades, rigorous identity checks, and strict vehicle inspections paralysed key corridors. Commuters faced severe bottlenecks as traffic restrictions and systematic diversions came into force early in the morning. Affected zones spanned major hubs including Connaught Place, Mandi House, Patel Chowk, the Ashoka Road-Jantar Mantar Road roundabout, and the Rail Bhawan roundabout.
Legal Grounds for Denial
Defending the aggressive clampdown, police officials stated that the CJP’s initial communications failed to qualify as a valid, duly filed application. Under protocol guidelines, demonstrations at Jantar Mantar require at least 10 days of advance notice. Authorities also highlighted previous infractions by organisers, such as exceeding permitted time limits, to justify the strict prohibition.
Despite the mass detentions and heavy-handed blockade, the CJP maintains that its grassroots framework remains active under Shinde’s direction, signalling that the pressure on electoral authorities is far from over.
