Shock and grief engulfed Hawakhana village under Gad Harishpur panchayat in Erasama block after a 26-year-old woman died under highly suspicious circumstances on Thursday night.
The incident came to light after the deceased’s brother filed a formal complaint at the Erasama police station on Friday, accusing her husband of murder.
The deceased has been identified as Sasmita Sahu (26). According to police sources, Sasmita had married Gobinda Giri of Hawakhana village seven years ago. The couple has two minor daughters.
The incident unfolded late Thursday night when Chandan Sahu, Sasmita’s brother and a resident of Sarabapata village under Jireilo panchayat, received a frantic call informing him of a severe altercation between his sister and brother-in-law. The caller reportedly informed Chandan that Gobinda had locked Sasmita inside the house and fled the scene.
Upon receiving the news, Chandan rushed to Hawakhana, only to find his sister lying dead inside the house.
Speaking about the tragedy, Chandan alleged that his sister was brutally murdered by her husband following a domestic dispute. Acting on his written complaint submitted on Friday morning, a team from Ersama police station arrived at the scene, seized the body, and dispatched it to a nearby hospital for an autopsy.
Police have detained the victim’s husband, Gobinda Giri, and are currently questioning him at the police station. Further investigation into the incident is underway, and officials stated that the exact cause of death will be confirmed once the post-mortem report is available.
