In a landmark move ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season, the JSW and GMR co-owned Delhi Capitals have officially announced the appointment of legendary former India captain Sourav Ganguly as the franchise’s new Head Coach.
Ganguly, affectionately known as ‘Dada’ and widely credited with shaping modern Indian cricket, takes over the reins as Delhi Capitals continue their pursuit of an elusive maiden IPL trophy.
A Deep-Rooted Association
Ganguly’s journey with the Delhi franchise is far from new. He first boarded the Capitals ecosystem back in 2019 as an Advisor. Over the years, the former BCCI president has shouldered multiple heavy-duty leadership roles, including serving as the Director of Cricket across both the men’s and women’s setups.
Welcoming the appointment, Delhi Capitals Chairman and Co-owner Parth Jindal expressed immense enthusiasm over Ganguly’s transition into active coaching:
“Dada is and has always been an integral part of the Delhi Capitals family. I am incredibly proud and honoured to announce that one of the greatest Indian captains and administrators is now stepping into coaching by taking over as the head coach of the Delhi Capitals. I am excited to see him take on this role and I’m sure that under his guidance and visionary leadership Delhi Capitals will be best prepared to challenge for the IPL title.”
Echoing similar sentiments, GMR Sports Founder and Co-owner Kiran Kumar Grandhi highlighted Ganguly’s profound familiarity with the franchise core:
“His deep understanding of the franchise, coupled with his experience and leadership, will be invaluable as we move forward. We are delighted to have him take charge as Head Coach and look forward to seeing him bring his vision and cricketing expertise to the team.”
Building a Fearless Unit
For Ganguly, stepping into the dugout as head coach marks an exciting new frontier. Having worked closely with the team’s management, support staff, and players in previous capacities, the veteran tactician feels right at home.
“I am looking forward to taking on the role of Head Coach in the IPL,” Ganguly stated. “Delhi Capitals is a franchise very close to my heart, and one that I have shared a strong relationship with over the years. We have a talented group and have played a good brand of cricket in the recent past. I am looking forward to working with the squad, the new season, and building a strong and fearless team.”
With the auction and preparations for IPL 2027 drawing closer, all eyes will be on the ‘Prince of Calcutta’ as he brings his trademark grit and winning mentality to the Delhi dugout.
