The International Cricket Council (ICC) has imposed financial penalties on both India and the West Indies for maintaining slow over-rates during the third and final ODI of their three-match series in New Chandigarh.
The hosts were fined 20% of their match fee after being found four overs short of the target rate, while the visiting West Indies team was docked 10% for falling two overs behind after permissible time allowances were taken into account.
”The sanctions were imposed by Prakash Bhatt of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees after the conclusion of the ODI,” the ICC confirmed.
Under Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which addresses minimum over-rate offences, players face a 5% fine on their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl within the allotted timeframe.
No formal hearings were necessary as both team captains pleaded guilty to the charges and accepted the proposed penalties. The over-rate charges were officially leveled by on-field umpires Jayaraman Madanagopal and Sam Nogajski, along with third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid and fourth umpire Virender Sharma.
Despite the financial penalties, the final ODI delivered high-octane action on the field. India posted a formidable total of 351/7 in their 50 overs, anchored by a stellar unbeaten 129 from KL Rahul and an 85-ball 92 from Rohit Sharma. However, West Indies pulled off a remarkable chase, scoring 352/5 in 48.2 overs led by captain Shai Hope’s unbeaten 162 to secure a 5-wicket victory.
Key takeaways from the three-match series include:
- Series Winner: India claimed the ODI series 2-1 after winning the first two matches featuring strong runs-chases.
- Top-Order Form: Shubman Gill earned Player of the Series honors following his strong batting performances, which included a century and a record-breaking double hundred across the tournament.
- Bowling Concerns: India’s bowling vulnerabilities were highlighted in the final match, giving the team key areas to refine ahead of future white-ball fixtures.
Both sides now turn their attention to the upcoming five-match T20I series scheduled to kick off in Lucknow.
