Video-sharing platform YouTube experienced a widespread global outage on Tuesday, disrupting access for users across multiple countries, including India and the United States.
Hundreds of thousands of users reported difficulties loading videos, accessing the homepage, and using related services.
Many users encountered error messages while opening the app and website, with videos failing to play and repeated “something went wrong” notifications appearing on screens.
Google Confirms Technical Issue
Parent company Google acknowledged the disruption in an official statement posted by TeamYouTube on social media.
“We’re aware some of you are having issues accessing YouTube right now. Our teams are aware, and we’ll provide updates as soon as we have them.”
Later, YouTube’s help page clarified that the outage stemmed from a malfunction in its recommendations system. The issue prevented videos from appearing across multiple surfaces, including the homepage, the main app, YouTube Music, and YouTube Kids.
“The homepage is back, but we’re still working on a full fix,” the company stated.
Over 3 Lakh Complaints in the US, Thousands in India
Outage tracking platform Downdetector recorded a sharp spike in complaints globally during the disruption.
-
In the United States, more than 3,20,000 users reported issues at the peak.
-
In India, over 19,000 complaints were logged within minutes during morning hours.
The data indicates that the outage was global rather than limited to a specific region.
Users also reported elevated issues with YouTube TV and certain Google services, suggesting a broader platform-side technical problem.
Downdetector compiles outage data based on user-submitted reports and other signals. While figures may not represent the total number of affected users, they provide a reliable trend indicator during major service disruptions.
Social Media Flooded with Complaints
As the outage unfolded, social media platforms were flooded with posts from users across regions sharing screenshots and updates about simultaneous access failures.
YouTube, which serves more than 2.5 billion monthly active users worldwide, is the world’s largest video-sharing platform. The disruption highlights the scale of dependence on digital streaming services in daily life.
Current Status
While YouTube has restored its homepage functionality, teams continue to work on a complete resolution of the issue. Users are advised to check official updates from YouTube or Google for further developments.
