A young man from Berhampur in Odisha’s Ganjam district is battling for life after allegedly setting himself on fire in a public area.
The victim, identified as Suraj Sahu, sustained 80% burn injuries and is currently in critical condition.
The incident occurred at Methu Chhak under Bada Bazar police limits. According to reports, Suraj poured petrol over himself and ignited the flames. Police responded swiftly and rescued him, but his injuries were already severe. He was initially admitted to the burn ward at MKCG Medical College and Hospital, but was later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital due to his deteriorating condition.
Authorities are investigating the motive behind the act. A cryptic Instagram post by Suraj before the incident read, “If something happens to me, no one is responsible,” raising concerns about his mental state. Police are questioning family members to understand the circumstances that led to this extreme step.
Berhampur SP and other senior officials have visited both the site and the hospital. A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway to uncover the events that may have triggered the self-immolation.
