Prime Minister Narendra Modi met his Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni on the sidelines of the 51st G7 Summit in Canada, creating a social media buzz with a light-hearted and candid exchange that quickly went viral.
In the video, Meloni is seen warmly greeting PM Modi and saying, “You are the best. I’m trying to be as you,” prompting smiles across social media platforms. The friendly moment was widely interpreted as a symbol of growing camaraderie between the two leaders and their nations.
Both leaders later took to X (formerly Twitter) to reaffirm their commitment to strengthening India-Italy relations. PM Modi posted, “India’s friendship with Italy will continue to get stronger, greatly benefitting our people!”
The meeting underscored New Delhi’s expanding global footprint, with India being invited to the G7 not just for its economic stature but also for its leadership in global forums like the G20.
PM Modi is attending the G7 Summit in Toronto, Canada, as part of a three-nation tour. This is his sixth consecutive participation in the G7 and his first visit to Canada in a decade.
On Day 1 of the summit, PM Modi met with newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Carney acknowledged India’s growing influence, stating: “Modi and India’s presence at the G7 reflects the dynamism of the Indian economy and the leadership role India plays globally.”
Before arriving in Canada, PM Modi visited Cyprus, where he was conferred the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III, the country’s highest civilian award. After the G7 Summit, he is scheduled to visit Croatia as the final leg of his diplomatic tour.
