The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a steady rise in temperatures across Odisha, with intense heatwave conditions expected between March and May 2026.

According to the IMD, there will be no significant change in maximum (daytime) temperatures across Odisha’s districts over the next six to seven days. However, the broader seasonal outlook indicates that residents may experience prolonged and above-normal heat conditions in the coming months.

Temperatures Already Near 38°C

As March begins, temperatures have already climbed sharply. Over the past 24 hours, Jharsuguda recorded a maximum temperature of 38°C, while Bhubaneswar reported 37.5°C. The early spike signals the onset of an intense summer season.

Weather officials have projected that temperatures in parts of the state could touch 40°C within the next two days. Western Odisha and select coastal districts are expected to witness a further rise in mercury levels.

At present, no major weather systems are active over the region, and no district-level weather alerts have been issued. Authorities indicate that maximum daytime temperatures are likely to hover between 36°C and 38°C, while minimum night temperatures may range between 23°C and 25°C.

Above-Normal Heatwave Days Expected Nationwide

The IMD’s seasonal outlook suggests that from March to May, much of India is likely to experience above-normal heatwave conditions.

Eastern and east-central India are expected to record a higher-than-average number of heatwave days. Similar conditions are forecast for parts of northwest, central, and southeastern India.

States projected to experience an increase in heatwave days include:

  • Odisha

  • West Rajasthan

  • Gujarat

  • Haryana

  • South and East Maharashtra

  • East Uttar Pradesh

  • Bihar

  • Jharkhand

  • Gangetic West Bengal

  • Chhattisgarh

  • Telangana

  • Andhra Pradesh

  • North Interior Karnataka

  • North Tamil Nadu

Advisory for Residents

With temperatures rising steadily, health experts advise residents—especially older adults, children, outdoor workers, and vulnerable communities—to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours, and follow local advisories.
