India’s young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal broke his silence after his heartbreaking run-out during the second Test against the West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. The 23-year-old batter, who was on the verge of another double century, was dismissed for 175 following a miscommunication with skipper Shubman Gill on Day 2.
The Costly Mix-Up
The incident occurred in the second over of the day. Jaiswal pushed a delivery towards mid-off and called for a quick single, but Gill stayed put at the non-striker’s end, leading to confusion.
By the time Jaiswal turned back, Tagenarine Chanderpaul’s direct throw had caught him short of the crease.
Visibly dejected, Jaiswal exchanged a few heated words with Gill before walking off the field. The umpire intervened as the crowd, which had gathered in large numbers, watched in stunned silence.
“It’s a Part of the Game” — Jaiswal on the Incident
Speaking to the host broadcaster after stumps, Jaiswal chose to downplay the moment, saying such things happen in cricket.
“It’s a part of the game. So it’s fine,” Jaiswal said calmly when asked about the run-out.
The left-hander added that he prefers to focus on his performance rather than dwelling on mistakes.
“I always try to play as long as I can. If I stay at the crease, I know runs will come. Early on, there was movement, but once I got settled, I looked to bat deep,” he said.
Jaiswal’s Incredible Run of Form
This was Jaiswal’s fifth Test score above 150, underlining his consistency at the top of the order.
He narrowly missed what could have been his third double century in Test cricket, continuing a dream run that began with his debut series in 2023.
He also highlighted his focus on mental discipline:
“There’s always a thought about what I can achieve, but it’s important to stay in the present and play for the team.”
India in Command After Day 2
India declared their first innings at 518/5, with centuries from both Jaiswal (175) and Gill (100).
At stumps, West Indies were 140/4, trailing India by 378 runs.
Ravindra Jadeja picked up three wickets, while Kuldeep Yadav claimed one.
India, having already won the first Test, are in a strong position to complete a 2-0 series sweep.
