World Champions Germany showcased their class and quality by defeating Ireland in their first encounter in the FIH Pro League held in Bhubaneswar on Monday.
Germany started strongly, establishing an early lead with two goals in the first quarter. Thies Prinz opened the scoring with a 7th-minute penalty corner, followed by Thomas Struthof’s low reverse shot, making it 2-0.
Ireland fought back, with Matthew Nelson scoring to halve the deficit. However, Germany swiftly responded, reestablishing their two-goal cushion. Ben Walker’s efforts earned Ireland a penalty stroke, which Peter McKibbin converted, marking his first goal for Ireland and bringing the score to 3-2. Nevertheless, Raphael Hartkopf’s goal just before halftime saw Germany lead 4-2 at the break.
Despite Ireland’s positive play and multiple attempts to challenge German goalkeeper Jean-Paul Danneberg, Germany’s efficiency and clinical finishing were evident. The second half witnessed Germany netting twice in both the third and fourth quarters, showcasing their dominance and securing a comfortable victory.
Germany’s performance highlighted their early pressure, consistent play, and effective responses to Ireland’s attempts, demonstrating why they remain a force to be reckoned with in the FIH Pro League.
