The Odisha capital has been gripped by profound shock and panic following a grave criminal incident in the Nayapalli police station limits.
A 26-year-old woman has formally alleged that she was brutally assaulted and raped at gunpoint inside her rented accommodation located in the Behera Sahi area. The incident has sent shockwaves through the locality, triggering serious concerns regarding the safety and security of women residing in urban areas.
According to preliminary details shared by the Commissionerate Police, the victim arrived at the Nayapalli police station late Wednesday night to lodge a detailed written complaint. The young woman lived in a rented house on the first floor alongside her elder sister—while their landlord resides on the ground floor.
The terrifying ordeal unfolded when the victim was home alone. An unidentified intruder managed to force his way into the premises. Brandishing what appeared to be a real or toy firearm, the miscreant terrorised the helpless victim and forcibly subjected her to sexual assault.
Acting swiftly on the distressing complaint, the Nayapalli police registered a formal criminal case. Recognising the extreme sensitivity and gravity of the matter, Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Saravana Vivek M, alongside other senior Commissionerate Police officials, rushed directly to the crime scene to oversee the initial investigation.
A specialised forensic scientific team has scoured the area, collecting crucial physical evidence, fingerprints, and data samples from the scene. Authorities are also meticulously scanning closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from surrounding streets to trace the movement and identity of the suspect.
Specialised police teams have been constituted to carry out raids across suspected hideouts.
