Phulbani and the entire Kandhamal district have been reeling under severe cold for the past two weeks. Mercury continues to dip, intensifying the chill and forcing residents to gather around fires in the evenings.

On Wednesday, Phulbani recorded a minimum temperature of 9°C, while Daringbadi—often called the “Kashmir of Odisha”—registered 8.5°C. On Thursday, Phulbani measured 11°C and Daringbadi 11.5°C. Udayagiri reported the lowest temperatures, ranging between 5°C and 7°C.

The biting cold has disrupted daily life. Markets turn deserted after sunset, and residents avoid stepping out before 9 a.m. Villagers in Belghar, Tumudibandh, Kotagarh, Raikia, Phiringia, Khajuripara, Tikabali, and Chakapada also reported intense cold conditions. Many labourers have stopped going to work due to the freezing weather.

Meteorologist Jitendra Swain predicted that the cold wave would intensify further in the coming days. He noted that both towns and villages are experiencing similar conditions, with people lighting fires to stay warm.

Meanwhile, the Tourism Department has opened eco-retreats, and the Forest Department has prepared cottages to attract visitors to Kandhamal’s scenic spots. Tourists enjoy morning walks and relish the winter chill.

The cold wave has also boosted demand for winter clothing. Shops display sweaters, coats, caps, and blankets, drawing crowds eager to buy warm apparel. The surge in sales reflects how residents are adapting to the harsh weather.
