Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced a major welfare package worth Rs 41.17 crore from the Kendu Leaf Welfare Fund to strengthen the livelihood of kendu leaf pluckers, binders, and seasonal employees for the 2024 crop year and the 2025–26 financial year.

The government distributed benefits to 8,59,727 kendu leaf pluckers. Each worker received footwear worth Rs 160, carrying cloth worth Rs 200, and head caps worth Rs 100. In total, the state disbursed Rs 39.54 crore, reflecting respect for the hard work and valuable contribution of kendu leaf workers.

Additionally, 18,768 binders received Rs 700 each for blankets and mosquito nets, amounting to Rs 1.31 crore. The government also provided ₹100 each to 16,237 seasonal employees, totalling Rs 16.23 lakh.

Officials highlighted that the initiative demonstrates the state’s commitment to improving the welfare and dignity of kendu leaf workers. The package aims to provide social security, better working conditions, and recognition for their contribution to Odisha’s forest-based economy.

Chief Minister’s leadership and the direct supervision of Forest and Environment Minister Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia ensured the successful implementation of these measures. The departments of Labour and State Employees Insurance also played a crucial role in executing the welfare schemes.

The package elevates opportunities, safety, and social respect for kendu leaf workers across Odisha. Authorities emphasised that the initiative will enrich livelihoods while strengthening the economic foundation of rural communities dependent on kendu leaf collection.
