Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport in Kerala.
Developed at a cost of ₹8,800 crore, this project is set to transform India’s trade logistics and strengthen its position in global commerce.
Addressing the gathering, PM Modi highlighted the historical significance of Kerala’s coastal trade and its vital role in the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor. He emphasised that prior to colonial rule, India’s thriving maritime economy contributed significantly to global GDP, and the newly launched port will reignite this legacy by reducing the nation’s reliance on foreign transhipment hubs.
The port boasts a deep draft of nearly 20 meters, enabling the docking of some of the world’s largest cargo ships, a move that will streamline global trade operations. In addition, the government’s Sagarmala and PM-GatiShakti initiatives aim to enhance intermodal connectivity by integrating waterways, railways, highways, and airways, further boosting India’s logistics capabilities.
In his speech, the Prime Minister also paid tribute to Adi Shankaracharya on his birth anniversary, recognising his contributions to India’s spiritual unity. Additionally, PM Modi remembered Pope Francis, acknowledging his global service and humanitarian efforts.
With its strategic location along major international trade routes, the Vizhinjam Port is expected to generate new economic opportunities, propel job creation, and bolster India’s growing prominence in maritime trade.
