Odisha on Thursday joined the rest of the country in celebrating Vijayadashami, the festival that signifies the triumph of good over evil.
The occasion was marked with rituals at temples and puja mandaps across the state, where Maa Durga was venerated for vanquishing the demon Mahishasura.
From the early hours, devotees thronged community pandals and shrines, immersing themselves in Vedic chants and the recitation of the Chandi Path. Priests are conducting the traditional Aparajita Puja this afternoon, followed by the symbolic immersion of the Kalash (sacred pitcher), which formally concludes the nine-day Durga Puja festivities.
Organisers across Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, and other major towns reported heavy footfall since morning. Families gathered in large numbers to seek divine blessings, creating an atmosphere charged with spirituality and celebration. Cultural programmes, community feasts, and religious observances have blended to reflect the festive spirit of Odisha’s vibrant tradition.
Ravan Podi Events Scheduled
The day also coincides with the legendary victory of Lord Ram over Ravana. As dusk approaches, Ravan Dahan or Ravan Podi ceremonies are set to be held in multiple towns and cities, where towering effigies of Ravana will be set ablaze. Organisers expect thousands of spectators at large grounds, with strict security and crowd management measures in place.
Rain Disruptions Across Districts
However, the celebrations have been dampened by intermittent showers triggered by a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal. While many outdoor gatherings and processions faced delays and thinner turnouts during the day, officials have assured that evening programmes, including the Ravan Dahan, will go ahead with necessary precautions.
