Veteran actor Achyut Potdar, best remembered for his iconic role as the stern yet endearing professor in 3 Idiots, passed away on August 18, 2025, at the age of 91.
He breathed his last at Jupiter Hospital in Thane following health complications.
Before entering the world of cinema, Potdar served in the Indian Armed Forces and later worked with Indian Oil. His transition to acting in the 1980s marked the beginning of a prolific career spanning over four decades.
Potdar appeared in more than 125 films across Hindi and Marathi cinema, including Tezaab, Parinda, Rangeela, Vaastav, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, and Ventilator. His portrayal of the professor in 3 Idiots remains a pop culture touchstone, with his line “kya baat hai” still echoing across social media.
He also made a mark on television with roles in Wagle Ki Duniya, Mrs Tendulkar, and Bharat Ki Khoj, showcasing his versatility across formats.
Tributes have poured in from fans and industry veterans alike, remembering Potdar as a dedicated performer whose humility and craft left an indelible impression. His funeral is scheduled for August 19 in Thane.
