Indian Railways is set to introduce the country’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train, marking a significant upgrade in long-distance rail travel. The premium sleeper service will initially operate on the Kolkata–Guwahati route, offering passengers a faster, safer, and more comfortable overnight journey.
Designed to redefine sleeper travel, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train brings several passenger-friendly reforms, including a simplified and transparent ticket booking system.
No RAC or Waiting List: Only Confirmed Tickets
In a major shift from the traditional reservation system, the new sleeper train will operate without Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC) or waiting lists. This means passengers will receive only confirmed berths, eliminating uncertainty during travel.
Additionally, Indian Railways has abolished the officers’ quota for this service. All berths will be open for public booking from the first day of the advance reservation period, ensuring equal access for all travellers.
Ticket Fares and Coach Composition
The 16-coach Vande Bharat Sleeper Train will have a total passenger capacity of approximately 823 travellers, featuring Third AC (3A), Second AC (2A), and First Class AC (1A) coaches.
Indian Railways has fixed a minimum chargeable distance of 400 kilometres for fare calculation. Passengers travelling shorter distances will still be charged for 400 km.
Fare per kilometre:
-
Third AC: ₹2.40
-
Second AC: ₹3.10
-
First Class AC: ₹3.80
Minimum ticket fares (excluding GST):
-
Third AC: ₹960
-
Second AC: ₹1,240
-
First Class AC: ₹1,520
An additional 5% GST will be applicable on all fares.
High-Speed Sleeper Train with Advanced Features
Built using indigenous Indian Railways technology, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is capable of running at speeds of up to 180 kmph. Passenger safety has been prioritised with the integration of the Kavach collision avoidance system and 24×7 CCTV surveillance.
Other key features include:
-
Ergonomically designed sleeper berths
-
Automatic sliding doors
-
Enhanced cleanliness and hygiene standards
-
Smooth and quiet ride experience
Together, these upgrades promise a safer and more comfortable overnight journey for long-distance passengers.
Launch Timeline and Expansion Plans
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the Guwahati–Kolkata Vande Bharat Sleeper Train on January 17. Indian Railways plans to operationalise eight Vande Bharat sleeper trains within the next six months, with an ambitious target of manufacturing 12 new sleeper variants by the end of 2026.
