A mosque in Peacehaven, near Brighton on England’s south coast, was set on fire on Saturday night, prompting police to investigate the incident as a suspected hate crime.

Two people were inside the mosque at the time of the attack but escaped unharmed.

Attack Caught on Camera

According to reports, two individuals wearing balaclavas attempted to break open the mosque’s door before pouring gasoline on the steps and setting it ablaze.

A volunteer at the mosque told the BBC, “It could have been murder.” The quick action of the two people inside prevented any injuries.

Police Investigation Underway

Sussex Police confirmed that the front entrance of the mosque and a vehicle parked outside were damaged in the fire.

Detective Superintendent Karrie Bohanna said, “We understand the concerns this has caused within the community, and the impact that will be felt by the Muslim community as a result.”

Authorities have launched a detailed investigation and increased security in the area to ensure the safety of local residents.

Incident Follows Manchester Synagogue Attack

The Peacehaven arson occurred just days after another tragic attack outside a synagogue in Manchester, which left two Jewish people dead.

The suspect, identified as Jihad Al-Shamie, a 35-year-old British citizen of Syrian descent, was shot dead at the scene.

Community Leaders Call for Unity

Tariq Jung, Chair of the Brighton and Hove Muslim Forum, said the attacks in Manchester and Peacehaven have left “everybody deeply saddened and appalled.”
He urged people of all faiths to stand together:
“Whether you are Jewish, Christian, Hindu, or Muslim, no one should fear being harmed while worshipping. We must come together in peace and support each other in this time of need.”
