Tamil Nadu Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin was arrested after making controversial remarks involving actor Trisha during a DMK rally in Thanjavur, sparking a major political clash between the DMK and the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
The arrest followed a case registered by Thanjavur East Police under multiple sections, including provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act, and the Information Technology Act. Police reached Udhayanidhi’s residence and took him in for questioning, prompting protests by DMK workers outside his home.
The controversy erupted when supporters at the rally began chanting “Trisha, Trisha.” Udhayanidhi’s response to the chants was accused of being a double entendre, drawing sharp criticism from TVK and BJP leaders. Opponents alleged his remarks were disrespectful to women and inappropriate for a senior political leader.
TVK escalated the matter by approaching the National Commission for Women, demanding suo motu action and an unconditional apology. The party announced statewide protests, accusing Udhayanidhi of lowering political standards. BJP leaders also condemned the remarks, calling them “vulgar and shameful,” and demanded strict legal action.
Meanwhile, the DMK defended Udhayanidhi, alleging that the arrest was politically motivated and aimed at silencing the opposition during the Assembly session. Party MPs raised the issue in Parliament, with Rajya Sabha MP P. Wilson submitting a notice under Rule 267 for discussion.
The arrest has intensified Tamil Nadu’s political confrontation, with both sides trading accusations and mobilising supporters.
