Two jawans of the 33 Assam Rifles lost their lives and four others sustained injuries—one critically—after unidentified gunmen ambushed their convoy near Nambol Sabal Leikai in Manipur’s Bishnupur district on Friday evening.

The attack occurred around 5:50 PM as the convoy was en route from Imphal to Bishnupur.

Security forces swiftly responded, deploying reinforcements and launching a search operation in the area. The injured personnel were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh condemned the attack, calling it a “cruel blow” to the state and demanding the harshest punishment for the perpetrators.

Authorities continue to investigate the ambush, while the region remains on high alert.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions in Manipur, which has witnessed recurring unrest since last year.
