Incessant rainfall since early morning disrupted train services in Odisha’s Rayagada district on Monday, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded.
The Koraput–Visakhapatnam passenger train was forced to halt near Tikiri station after nearly two feet of rainwater inundated the railway track.
Reports indicate that runoff from nearby hills and overflow from an adjacent drain caused severe waterlogging on the track, making train movement unsafe. The train, scheduled to reach Rayagada around noon, was stopped at Tikiri station around 10 am, leaving passengers anxious and uncomfortable inside the stranded coaches.
The situation was not confined to Tikiri alone. Waterlogging was also reported near Rauli station, raising concerns about broader disruptions in the region. Senior railway officials rushed to assess the situation and kept a close watch on the rising water levels.
Authorities confirmed that train services would resume only after the water receded and engineers conducted a thorough safety inspection of the track. By noon, as rainfall eased and water levels dropped, the stranded train was cleared to continue its journey.
