A potentially devastating mishap was narrowly averted on Wednesday morning after a wooden passenger boat capsized while crossing the Indravati River near Dashamantpur in Koraput district’s Jaipur block.
According to eyewitnesses, the overcrowded traditional wooden boat suddenly tilted mid-river, sending several passengers into the swirling monsoon-fed waters. In a swift show of solidarity, nearby villagers and passersby rushed to the scene, using ropes and country boats to pull the victims to safety.
Some passengers managed to swim ashore, while others were rescued through coordinated efforts by locals. No fatalities or serious injuries were reported.
An official from the Koraput district administration stated that the incident occurred during a routine crossing but underscored the heightened dangers posed by unpredictable currents during the monsoon. “The rising water levels make river travel especially risky during this time. We urge everyone to prioritise safety and avoid overcrowding,” the official said.
Authorities have since reiterated the importance of using life jackets and ensuring boat stability. The event has drawn attention to the lack of regulated transport infrastructure at ghats in remote blocks like Lamtaput and Jaipur.
The administration plans to initiate awareness campaigns and stricter safety measures to prevent future mishaps.
