Tension gripped the bustling Mastercanteen square here on Saturday as the Odisha unit of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and CJP (Cockroach Janata Party) activists staged a high-octane protest.
Echoing the fierce demonstrations at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, the local agitators raised vociferous demands for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar amidst escalating allegations of electoral malpractice and vote theft.
A Mock Dock and Blistering Slogans
In a striking visual display, AAP workers appeared at the protest site wearing cutout masks of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and CEC Gyanesh Kumar. Placing the figures in a symbolic mock dock, the demonstrators channelled their outrage through thunderous chants. Slogans like “Vote Chor Gaddi Chhod” (Vote Thief, Step Down from Power), “Modi Hatao Desh Bachao” (Remove Modi, Save the Country), and “Modi Hatao Loktantra Bachao” (Remove Modi, Save Democracy) reverberated across the key intersection.
The protest drew strong local leadership, including AAP Odisha State Secretary Soumyaranjan Swain, who actively drove the momentum both on the ground and across digital media. Sharing live clips online, Swain amplified the movement with punchy remarks like “Gyanu It’s Done Bro” and traditional satirical jibes, capturing widespread public attention.
Cracking Down on Dissent
As the slogan-shouting escalated and the crowd swelled with passionate young men and women, local law enforcement stepped in. Police personnel intervened to dismantle the gathering, detaining several key activists and protesters from the site.
Protestors vehemently condemned the police crackdown in Bhubaneswar, drawing parallels to the heavy-handed security measures and detentions reported in Delhi. Despite the police action, organisers asserted that the momentum could not be stalled. Highlighting solidarity with the national movement, several young women from Bhubaneswar have already departed for New Delhi to join the core protest front at Jantar Mantar, deeming the defence of democratic institutions a non-negotiable imperative.
Core Demands of the Agitation
The synchronised demonstrations in Bhubaneswar and Delhi are anchored by a series of aggressive demands aimed at overhauling India’s electoral apparatus:
-
Immediate Resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
-
Scrapping of the controversial Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.
-
Restoration of the Chief Justice’s role in the panel for appointing Election Commissioners.
-
Reversion to traditional ballot paper voting systems.
As opposition voices band together, AAP leaders have issued a stern warning: the protests will persist across Odisha and nationwide until transparency, accountability, and absolute fairness are successfully restored to India’s democratic framework.
