A tourist lost their life after being swept away by strong currents while bathing at Satapada in Chilika Lake, under the Brahmagiri block of Odisha’s Puri district, on Sunday. The tragic incident has raised renewed concerns over tourist safety in the ecologically sensitive and high-footfall area.
According to officials, the mishap occurred near the Chilika mouth when the tourist, who had arrived at Satapada for sightseeing, entered the water to take a bath. Eyewitnesses said the individual was suddenly caught in strong and unpredictable currents and was pulled into deeper waters.
Rescue Operation Launched, Body Recovered
After receiving information, teams from the Odisha Fire Services Department rushed to the spot and launched a search and rescue operation. Following several hours of effort, the body was recovered from the Baghamunda coast.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been officially confirmed. Police have initiated necessary legal formalities and are continuing further investigation.
Authorities Reiterate Safety Advisory
Local authorities once again urged visitors to strictly follow safety guidelines while visiting Chilika Lake. Despite repeated advisories, tourists are often seen entering restricted or unsafe zones, putting their lives at risk.
Officials have advised tourists to:
-
Avoid bathing in deep or restricted waters
-
Follow instructions issued by local officials and lifeguards
-
Remain cautious near areas with strong currents, especially close to the lake mouth
Chilika Lake, a major tourist attraction and a sensitive ecological zone, witnesses a large influx of visitors throughout the year. Authorities have stressed that responsible tourism and adherence to safety norms are essential to prevent such unfortunate incidents.
