Kolkata Knight Riders announced Tim Southee as their new bowling coach for IPL 2026, thereby strengthening their backroom staff with one of cricket’s most accomplished fast bowlers.
Southee retired from international cricket in 2025 after a stellar career spanning more than 15 years. Moreover, he represented New Zealand in 107 Tests, 161 ODIs, and 126 T20 Internationals, claiming 776 wickets across formats. Known for his swing, accuracy, and calm leadership, Southee captained New Zealand in multiple formats and played pivotal roles in the 2019 ICC World Cup campaign and the 2021 ICC World Test Championship victory.
KKR highlighted Southee’s tactical knowledge and prior association with the franchise as key reasons for his appointment. Furthermore, he previously played for the Knight Riders in the 2021, 2022, and 2023 IPL seasons, which makes him familiar with the team’s culture and environment.
Venky Mysore, CEO of KKR, welcomed Southee warmly, saying his technical expertise and leadership qualities would help shape the bowling unit. In addition, he emphasised that Southee’s calm approach and mentoring ability make him an ideal guide for young bowlers.
Southee expressed excitement about returning to the franchise, describing KKR as “home.” He praised the team’s culture, passionate fans, and talented players. He also added that he looks forward to working closely with the bowlers and contributing to the team’s success in IPL 2026.
With Southee’s appointment, KKR aims to strengthen its bowling department and build momentum ahead of the new season. Finally, his presence adds international pedigree and experience to the coaching staff, boosting the franchise’s confidence as they prepare for the upcoming campaign.
