A Low Pressure Area has developed over the east Equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining central parts of the south Bay of Bengal, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

As per the latest meteorological bulletin issued at 8:30 AM IST on February 16, the system has formed under the influence of an upper air cyclonic circulation. Weather experts indicate that it is likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify further. By February 18, the system is expected to become more marked over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining east Equatorial Indian Ocean.

Fishermen Advised to Avoid Sea Until February 21

In view of the developing weather system and the potential for squally winds and rough sea conditions, authorities have issued a precautionary advisory for fishing communities and maritime stakeholders.

Fishermen are strongly advised not to venture into the sea in the affected regions between February 16 and February 21. Those currently at sea are urged to return to the coast at the earliest to ensure safety.

Area-Wise Weather Advisory

According to IMD’s advisory:

  • February 16: Parts of the southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal and the east Equatorial Indian Ocean may experience adverse conditions.

  • February 17: Warning extends to parts of the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining east Equatorial Indian Ocean, along and off the south Sri Lanka coast.

  • February 18: Many areas in the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining east Equatorial Indian Ocean, including regions along and off the Sri Lanka coast, are likely to witness rough weather.

  • February 19: Adverse conditions are expected over several parts of the southwest Bay of Bengal, east Equatorial Indian Ocean, along and off the Sri Lanka coast, and parts of the Gulf of Mannar and Comorin area.

  • February 20: Rough sea conditions are forecast to continue over many parts of the southwest Bay of Bengal, adjoining east Equatorial Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka coastal regions, including the Gulf of Mannar and Comorin area.

Authorities Urge Vigilance

Coastal residents, fishing communities, shipping operators, and marine workers are encouraged to remain alert and regularly follow official weather updates. Meteorological agencies are closely monitoring the system and will provide timely updates regarding its movement and intensity.

Public safety remains the top priority, and all stakeholders are urged to cooperate with advisories to minimize risk.
