A tragic incident unfolded in Odisha’s Koraput district on Thursday morning after a school teacher was swept away by the strong currents of the Kolab River while fishing.
The missing person has been identified as Bhimadhar Nayak, a resident of the Bandhaguda area. Nayak is currently employed as a teacher at the Machaliput School.
According to reports, Nayak had gone to the Kolab River early in the morning accompanied by a friend to catch fish. While standing along the riverbank near Intake Road on the Koraput–Damanjodi route, a sudden surge of powerful water currents swept him away into the river.
His companion managed to swim back safely to the shore, but Nayak was quickly carried away by the forceful stream and could not be traced.
Upon receiving information about the incident, local authorities dispatched a Fire Services team to the location. Emergency personnel immediately launched a search and rescue operation to locate the missing teacher.
However, ongoing heavy rainfall in the region combined with the turbulent, fast-flowing waters of the Kolab River has posed severe challenges for the rescue team. Search operations are currently underway across multiple downstream locations along the riverbank.
