A deep depression currently centred approximately 80 km from Rayagada has triggered heavy rainfall and strong winds across several parts of Odisha.
Providing details on the current weather system, Manorama Mohanty, Director of the Regional Meteorological Centre, stated that the system is expected to gradually weaken into a regular depression by this evening.
Despite the expected weakening, intense weather conditions will continue throughout the day. Gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 75 km/h are expected to prevail until evening, prompting authorities to advise caution.
Over the past 24 hours, the state has witnessed widespread downpours, with extremely heavy rainfall recorded at 7 locations and heavy rainfall reported at 58 places. Semiliguda in Koraput district recorded the highest rainfall in the state at a staggering 193.9 mm.
In light of the severe weather conditions, the Meteorological Department has issued a Red Alert for three southern districts: Koraput, Nabarangpur, and Kalahandi. Residents in these areas have been advised to stay vigilant against potential local flooding and waterlogging.
Furthermore, fishermen have been strictly prohibited from venturing into the sea until tomorrow due to rough sea conditions and hazardous wind speeds along the coast.
