Tamil Nadu Election Results 2026: Vijay’s TVK Near Majority Mark, Emerges as Key Contender in Historic Debut

Actor-turned-politician Vijay has delivered a remarkable performance in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, with his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerging as a dominant force in early trends.

According to data from the Election Commission of India, TVK is leading in over 100 seats and has, at various points during counting, come close to or crossed the majority mark of 118 seats required to form the government in the 234-member विधानसभा.

Close Contest as Rivals Trail Behind

The contest remains dynamic, with traditional heavyweights like Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam trailing behind TVK in the latest trends.

While both parties continue to maintain a presence in multiple constituencies, the early momentum appears to favour TVK, marking a significant shift in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.

Vijay Leads in Key Constituencies

Vijay is currently leading in both constituencies he is contesting — Perambur and Tiruchirappalli (East). Despite initial fluctuations in early counting rounds, the TVK chief regained the lead and continues to maintain an advantage in both seats.

Meanwhile, prominent leaders such as M. K. Stalin have faced tough competition in their respective constituencies, reflecting the intensity of the electoral battle.

Debut Performance Reshapes State Politics

TVK’s strong showing in its very first electoral contest has disrupted the traditionally bipolar contest between DMK and AIADMK. The party contested all 234 seats independently, signalling a bold political entry that appears to have resonated with a broad section of voters.

At one point, TVK’s tally surged well beyond the majority mark, although subsequent rounds saw fluctuations. Even so, it continues to remain the single-largest party in early trends.

Majority Mark and Government Formation

In the Tamil Nadu Assembly, the “magic number” required to form a government is 118 seats. With TVK hovering around this mark, the final outcome will determine whether the party can secure a clear mandate or if post-poll alliances may come into play.

Notably, TVK has maintained that it is independent of both BJP and Congress, positioning itself as an alternative political force in the state.

Supporters Celebrate as Results Unfold

Supporters of Vijay have begun celebrating across parts of the state, with many hailing the possibility of a major political shift. Visuals from party offices and residences show enthusiastic crowds expressing optimism about TVK’s performance.

As counting continues, Tamil Nadu is witnessing one of its most unpredictable and closely watched elections in recent history. Whether TVK secures a full majority or faces a tighter finish, its debut has already marked a turning point in the state’s political narrative
