India’s gig workers have launched a nationwide protest today after petrol and diesel prices rose by Rs 3 per litre, marking the first major hike in nearly four years.
The Gig & Platform Service Workers Union (GIPSWU) announced a five-hour shutdown from 12 PM to 5 PM, demanding higher per‑kilometre rates and fuel compensation.
The union said the hike has pushed delivery workers from Swiggy, Zomato, and Blinkit into financial distress, affecting nearly 1.2 crore gig workers who rely on two‑wheelers for their livelihood. Petrol now costs Rs 97.77 per litre in Delhi, while diesel stands at Rs 90.67.
GIPSWU President Seema Singh called the increase a “direct blow” to workers already battling inflation and extreme heat. She urged the government and digital platforms to fix a minimum service rate of Rs 20 per kilometre.
Many delivery partners, including women, work 10–14 hours daily in harsh conditions. Rising fuel and maintenance costs have made their earnings unsustainable, forcing some to consider leaving the sector.
The union submitted memorandums to the government and major platforms seeking revised delivery rates and fuel compensation. It described today’s shutdown as a peaceful protest, highlighting the growing livelihood crisis among gig and platform workers.
According to NITI Aayog, India’s gig workforce stood at 77 lakh in 2020–21 and is projected to exceed 2.3 crore by 2029–30, underscoring the scale of the issue.
