The Supreme Court on Wednesday cancelled the bail granted to Olympic medalist Sushil Kumar in connection with the 2021 murder of junior national wrestling champion Sagar Dhankar.
The apex court overturned the Delhi High Court’s March 4 order and directed Kumar to surrender within a week.
A bench comprising Justices Sanjay Karol and Prashant Kumar Mishra ruled that the gravity of the charges and the nature of the crime warranted immediate custody. Kumar, along with several others, is accused of fatally assaulting Dhankar over a property dispute in May 2021. The incident also left two of Dhankar’s friends injured.
According to the postmortem report, Dhankar suffered cerebral damage due to blunt force trauma. The case has drawn national attention due to Kumar’s prominence in Indian wrestling and the violent nature of the crime.
Legal experts suggest the Supreme Court’s decision underscores the judiciary’s stance on accountability, regardless of public stature.
