Capital residents can now beat the summer heat with farm-fresh watermelons straight from Odisha’s fields.
The Odisha Rural Development and Marketing Society (ORMAS) today launched its vibrant “Summer Delight” watermelon fair at Sahid Nagar Durga Mandap, inaugurated by Panchayati Raj, Drinking Water and Rural Development Minister Rabi Narayan Naik.
Running from May 7 to May 17, the 11-day mela brings together nearly 15 Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) from 10 districts — Dhenkanal, Angul, Khordha, Malkangiri, Kendujhar, Kendrapada, Boudh, Mayurbhanj, Sambalpur, and Sundargarh. Shoppers can pick up juicy whole watermelons, refreshing watermelon juice, cut fruit bowls, creamy milkshakes, and cooling sharbat — all at prices that actually reward the growers.
ORMAS aims to sell around 150 tonnes of watermelon and generate business worth ₹30 lakh through both bulk tie-ups and retail sales. “This platform connects farmers directly with corporate buyers, institutions, and everyday consumers, ensuring they get the best price for their produce,” said ORMAS CEO Dr. Monika Priyadarshini.
Minister Naik praised the initiative as a win-win for both farmers and buyers. “For the farmer and the customer, this stall is a meaningful step,” he said, adding that the name “Summer Delight” perfectly captures the fair’s spirit of freshness and joy.
Beyond sales, the mela is part of ORMAS’s larger campaign to promote seasonal fruits, healthy eating habits, and strong support for local farmers. Organisers have extended a warm invitation to all Bhubaneswar residents: “Come, experience the taste of truly fresh and natural produce.”
