Bhubaneswar: Suicide among students in Odisha has increased by 58 per cent in three years till 2023, the assembly was informed on Monday.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, in a written response to BJD legislator Dhruba Charan Sahoo’s query, stated that student suicide cases escalated from 119 in 2021 to 173 in 2022, and further to 189 in 2023.
During this time, the state observed a higher incidence of suicides among female students compared to male students. In total, 218 male students and 263 female students died by suicide over the three years.
From 2021 to 2023, the state recorded a total of 17,778 suicide cases. The Chief Minister reported 5,649 cases in 2021, 6,140 in 2022, and 5,989 in 2023.
