Bengaluru’s cricket fervour turned tragic on Wednesday as thousands of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) fans gathered to celebrate the franchise’s historic maiden IPL victory.
However, the uncontrolled crowds near M. Chinnaswamy Stadium led to a deadly stampede, leaving 11 people dead and injuring 47 others.
RCB’s long-awaited IPL triumph ignited massive celebrations across Bengaluru, culminating in a planned victory parade. Originally scheduled as a grand affair, the parade was cancelled due to safety concerns. Nevertheless, eager fans thronged the stadium in overwhelming numbers, creating an uncontrollable surge that resulted in the stampede.
Authorities struggled to manage the growing crowd, and despite last-minute interventions, the situation spiralled out of control.
The unfortunate event has sparked political debates, with the opposition BJP blaming the ruling Congress government for inadequate planning and mismanagement. Karnataka BJP President BY Vijayendra harshly criticised the state’s handling of the event, claiming that the government prioritised publicity over public safety. Meanwhile, BCCI officials also voiced concerns, stating that better crowd control measures should have been enforced.
Despite the tragic incident, the RCB team went ahead with their celebrations at Chinnaswamy Stadium, lifting their long-sought IPL trophy before thousands of fans. While the night was meant to be one of jubilation, it is now remembered as one overshadowed by sorrow.
As investigations begin, the city mourns a celebration that should have been joyous but ended in tragedy.
