A shocking case of rape and deception under the pretext of marriage has surfaced in the capital. A staff nurse has accused Bhabatosh Mohanty, a resident of Balipatna, of sexually assaulting and cheating her after promising marriage.
According to police sources, the victim, who has been married for nine years and has a son, was living separately due to marital discord. During this period, she met the accused, who allegedly promised to marry her and entered into a live‑in relationship for nearly a year.
When the woman insisted on marriage, the accused reportedly changed his phone number and went into hiding in Balipatna. Upon visiting his house, the victim was allegedly abused by his father and brother. She later filed a Zero FIR at Lingaraj Police Station, following which the accused was arrested and produced in court.
Police said the investigation is ongoing and suspect the accused may have committed similar frauds earlier. If further complaints arise, he will be taken on remand for interrogation.
Legal experts note that sexual relations under false promise of marriage constitute a serious offence under Indian law.
