Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Monday lauded India’s weightlifting contingent for its stellar performance at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, saying each medal brought “immense joy to the country.”
India’s lifters bagged one gold, six silver, and one bronze, with Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu clinching the lone gold. The athletes were felicitated upon their return, receiving Rs 30 lakh for gold, Rs 20 lakh for silver, and Rs 10 lakh for bronze.
Mandaviya praised their dedication, noting that “whenever one of you won a medal, the news was announced in Parliament before proceedings began.” He encouraged those who missed out on medals, saying, “A sportsperson never loses — they either win or learn to win again.”
For Mirabai Chanu, the triumph marked her third consecutive CWG gold, following victories in 2018 and 2022. She expressed gratitude for the support and said her next goal is the Asian Games in Japan, where she will compete in the 49 kg category, aiming for the only major medal missing from her collection.
“The competition will be tough, but I’ll work as hard as I can to win that medal,” she said, adding that her focus will shift to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics afterwards.
