Heavy and incessant rainfall—sparked by the remnants of Cyclone Arnob—has triggered a mounting flood-like situation across southern Odisha, severely impacting the Ganjam and Gajapati districts.

According to a special bulletin released by the Water Resources Department, major rivers in the region have experienced a sharp surge in water levels, with the Rushikulya and Vanshadhara rivers crossing their respective danger marks.

At Purushottampur, the Rushikulya River is flowing dangerously at 19.2 meters, well above its danger mark of 16.84 meters. The water level continues to rise, running approximately 2.36 meters above the danger threshold, while maintaining a reading of 57.3 meters at Madanbarida. Similarly, the Banshadhara River at Kashinagar has breached its 54.60-meter danger mark, currently flowing at 55.3 meters with an upward trend. At Gunupur, the river is recorded at 13.4 meters.

Meanwhile, river water levels across the rest of the state remain largely under control. The Mahanadi River at Tikarapada is flowing at 101.09 meters (below the danger level), with stable conditions observed at Naraj. Other key rivers—including the Brahmani at Jenapur, Baitarani at Anandpur and Akhuapada, Budhabalanga at Balimunda, Subarnarekha at Rajghat, and Jalaka at Mathani Road Bridge—are currently flowing safely below their respective danger marks.

Reservoir Status and Official Advisory:

Water levels in major reservoirs across the state have increased due to the continuous downpour. While Hirakud Dam maintains a high water level with active water discharge, reservoirs like Rengali, Indravati, Upper Kolab, and Balimela remain under strict control.

The Water Resources Department is keeping a 24/7 vigil on all river basins and reservoir levels. Residents residing along the banks of the Rushikulya and Vanshadhara rivers have been strongly advised to stay alert and exercise caution as authorities continue to manage the evolving weather situation.
