South Africa etched their name into cricketing history with a resounding victory over Australia in the ICC World Test Championship Final at Lord’s, securing their first ICC senior men’s tournament triumph since 1998.

The Proteas chased down the modest fourth-day target of 69 runs, completing an emphatic five-wicket win in front of an electrified crowd.

The show’s star was Aiden Markram, whose remarkable 136-run knock played a defining role in securing the championship. His elegant stroke play neutralised Australia’s potent bowling attack, ensuring South Africa maintained control despite early fourth-day jitters. Markram’s dismissal just six runs shy of the finish line allowed him to bask in the atmosphere, earning a deserved standing ovation at Lord’s.

Temba Bavuma, leading the team with composed authority, contributed a crucial 66 runs, while Tristan Stubbs added an important eight before departing. South Africa’s bowling attack, spearheaded by the fiery Kagiso Rabada, dismantled Australia’s batting lineup, with Rabada claiming an outstanding nine wickets across both innings.

Despite efforts from Australia’s frontline bowlers, including Mitchell Starc (3/66) and Pat Cummins (1/59), their resistance wasn’t enough to prevent South Africa’s determined charge to victory. The Proteas finally broke free from the shackles of previous tournament heartbreaks, securing the ICC World Test Championship Mace after nearly three decades of near misses.

This victory marks a defining moment for South African cricket, restoring the team’s pride and solidifying their place among the elite. With stars like Markram and Rabada leading the charge, the future looks bright for the Proteas, and this win could signal the beginning of a new era for South African dominance on the global stage.
