Former legislator Md Moquim showcased his political strength in Bhubaneswar on National Youth Day, sparking widespread discussion about the possible formation of a new regional political party in Odisha. The event, held under the banner of the Odisha Youth Conclave organised by the Moquim Foundation, drew significant attention, with Moquim’s daughter and Congress MLA Sofia Firdous emerging as the central figure of the gathering.
Addressing the open gathering as the chief guest, Sofia Firdous strongly endorsed her father’s leadership and vision, urging people—especially the youth—to participate fearlessly in what she described as a collective struggle to build a new Odisha.
Call for Unity and Youth Participation
Speaking to the audience, Sofia said that no one should be afraid to join her father’s movement, asserting that when he takes up an issue with conviction, no force can stop him. She emphasized that youth unity is essential for nation-building, calling upon young people to come together for Odisha’s future.
Reflecting on her father’s journey, she said that Md Moquim had been serving the people of Cuttack even before entering politics, and that the people of Cuttack later entrusted her with responsibility by electing her as an MLA. She expressed confidence that her father’s vision and dreams would not fail.
Sophia also dismissed concerns about potential repercussions within the Congress party for her participation in the event, stating that she did not anticipate any issues.
Moquim Signals Demand for a New Political Option
Responding to the gathering, Md Moquim said that Odisha is seeking a new political alternative and urged people to step beyond hesitation and conventional boundaries. He remarked that the word “impossible” does not exist when there is determination, reiterating the need for active youth involvement in the state’s development.

Although several prominent leaders were reportedly invited, MLAs Himanshu Sahu (Dharamshala) and Sunil Mohanty (Puri) did not attend the conclave. AISF state president Sanghamitra Jena was among the few political figures present.
The event gained further significance as it coincided with Swami Vivekananda’s birth anniversary, strengthening speculation that the conclave marked the foundation of a new political platform. While some political observers and leaders, including senior politician Soumya Ranjan Patnaik, questioned the need for another party in an already crowded political landscape, others viewed the development as a potential warning signal for existing major parties.
