Smriti Mandhana has officially begun her tenure as India’s full-time T20I captain, leading the side in the first-ever bilateral T20I series against Zimbabwe Women in Raipur.
After succeeding Harmanpreet Kaur, Mandhana won her first toss in the role and chose to bowl first, citing the expected dew factor in the night match as India prepares for the 2027 Women’s Champions Trophy at home.
India’s Playing XI blends experience and fresh faces. Mandhana opens alongside vice-captain Shafali Verma, with Anushka Sharma and former captain Harmanpreet Kaur in the middle order. Niki Prasad makes her international debut, while Richa Ghosh keeps wickets. The bowling unit features Deepti Sharma, Sree Charani, Arundhati Reddy, Nandini Sharma, and Kranti Gaud.
Zimbabwe, captained by Josephine Nkomo, have named a settled batting lineup for the contest. Kelis Ndhlovu and Beloved Biza open, followed by Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano, Sharne Mayers, Michelle Mavunga, Nyasha Gwanzura, and Francisca Chipare. Modester Mupachikwa takes the gloves, with Nkomo herself in the middle order alongside Olinda Chare and Tendai Makusha. The visitors will look to build partnerships early and capitalise on any assistance from the pitch before the dew arrives.
This series marks a significant milestone for women’s cricket between the two nations, serving as both a competitive bilateral contest and valuable preparation under Mandhana’s leadership.
With the dew likely to play a role later in the game, India’s decision to bowl first reflects a strategic approach aimed at maximising early advantage with the ball.
All eyes will be on how the new leadership dynamic shapes India’s performance in Raipur and sets the tone for the series.
