World No. 1 Jannik Sinner made a thunderous start to his U.S. Open 2025 campaign, dispatching unseeded Czech Vit Kopriva in straight sets (6-1, 6-1, 6-2) at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
After withdrawing from the Cincinnati warm-up due to illness, Sinner returned in peak form, firing seven aces and showcasing his signature backhand precision.
“I’m very happy to be healthy again,” Sinner said post-match. “We did our best to be in top shape here.”
Sinner dominated from the outset, winning the first five games and dropping only two first-serve points in the opening set. Kopriva struggled to find rhythm, even slipping on court during a crucial moment in the second set. Though the Czech tightened his game in the third, Sinner extinguished both break points he faced and sealed the win with a line-kissing backhand.
Meanwhile, fellow Italian Lorenzo Musetti overcame a tough challenge from France’s Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. After losing the first set in a tiebreak, Musetti rallied to win 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. The 23-year-old showcased resilience and tactical brilliance, breaking Perricard once in each of the final three sets.
The victory marks a strong rebound for Musetti following his early Wimbledon exit and injury-forced retirement at Roland Garros.
With both Italians advancing, the U.S. Open 2025 is already buzzing with Mediterranean flair and high expectations.
