Jannik Sinner powered into the quarterfinals of the Vienna Open 2025, defeating fellow Italian Flavio Cobolli in a hard-fought last-16 match.
Sinner breezed through the first set 6-2, then held his nerve in a tense second-set tiebreak to win 7-6(4).
Returning to action after retiring with cramps in Shanghai, the four-time Grand Slam champion showed resilience and composure. He didn’t face a break point in the opening set and stayed mentally sharp despite missing four break chances in the second.
“He is a great talent and a great competitor,” Sinner said of Cobolli. “We both played some great tennis at times. I had some chances in the second but could not use them and that is tennis. I tried to stay in the moment and play with a great mentality.”
Sinner now faces eighth seed Alexander Bublik, who dispatched Francisco Cerundolo 6-4, 6-2. Second seed Alexander Zverev also advanced and will meet Tallon Griekspoor in the last eight.
In another notable result, France’s Corentin Moutet avenged his recent loss to Daniil Medvedev in Almaty by defeating the Russian 7-6(7/3), 6-4 just four days later.
