Newly-appointed ODI captain Shubman Gill opened up about leading India’s stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli ahead of the three-match series against Australia.
The 26-year-old batter addressed concerns about how his relationship with Rohit might change after taking over the captaincy. Gill reassured fans that his bond with both Rohit and Virat remains strong.
“Same as old times”
Gill emphasized that outside narratives about tension are far from reality.
“Whatever the narrative might be there outside, there has been no such thing between us. It is just like old times. He [Rohit] is very helpful and always shares his experiences. I have been asking him for his suggestions. I asked, ‘What would you have done on this wicket if you were the captain?’ I like to pick the brains of other players,” Gill said.
He added, “I have a good equation with both Virat and Rohit bhai. I always take their advice, and they are not hesitant when it comes to giving their take.”
Welcoming the legends back
When the Indian team departed for Australia, Rohit was seen hugging Gill, while Virat patted him on the back. Both Rohit and Virat are returning to international cricket after India’s Champions Trophy 2025 victory.
The upcoming series will also give insight into their form ahead of discussions around the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Big shoes to fill
Gill admitted leading such cricketing legends is both exciting and humbling.
“I mean, obviously, these are the kind of players I used to idolize when I was growing up. Their hunger inspired me. It is a big honour for me to lead such legends of the game,” he said.
He added that the series will offer multiple opportunities to learn from Rohit and Virat. “If I get in a difficult position, I wouldn’t shy away from taking advice from them.”
Learning from past experiences
Having recently overseen his first Test series win as captain, Gill said past learnings will help him navigate his ODI captaincy.
“Definitely, very exciting. Big shoes for me to fill in carrying forward the legacy of MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma. So many experiences and learnings I have had will help our team going forward,” he explained.
Gill also mentioned that numerous conversations with Rohit and Virat about team culture and strategy will guide India’s future on-field approach.
